2020 has been quite the discouraging year. The coming of a plague on America, division, civil unrest, violence, economic and social deterioration, bitterness, hate, and so on. On top of that one of my best friends Jack Murphy whom I spoke with nearly every day and with whom I routinely exchanged counsel was taken to heaven. Several other good friends are facing tremendous trials including life threatening health issues and I found out just yesterday that once again I will need back surgery sooner rather than later.

It is enough to make one discouraged – That is if we allow it.

I have a friend, Tino Wallenda, who lives in Sarasota. He is a family member of the “Flying Wallendas,” a group of daredevil performers who can trace their history back to 1780 and who perform at circuses and elsewhere with a death defying hire-wire act without safety nets.

I became friends with Tino in the Bill Glass Behind the Walls Prison Ministry and we went into prisons all over the country reaching out to inmates to receive Christ. Tino would bring in high wire equipment and perform far above the prison yard. He would take a chair and balance it on the wire and sit on it with his legs crossed and talk with the inmates using a lavalier mic and loudspeakers. The main thrust of his message was when he began walking across the wire, he would say that the secret to not falling was to look straight ahead and focus on where he was going. He told the inmates that life was like that and we must focus on Jesus Christ in order to avoid catastrophe. He went on to say if a high-wire person takes their eye off the goal just for a second then they could fall to their death. It was generally at this point he would feign stumbling to drive home his point.

We should take Tino’s example and focus on Jesus. It’s easy to get all wrapped up in ourselves and the things of the world including problems or material things and exclude Jesus who is the only one who can safely lead us to victory. Don’t take your eye off Jesus . . .

Colossians 3:2

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
