I was reading about the Universe the other day and read with interest about the mysterious “black holes” of outer space. Apparently entire constellations are sucked into these extreme gravitational aberrations and their light just disappears as if they were never there. I was thinking how it seemed to be a metaphor for sin. Entire nations seem to get sucked into an abyss of sin prompted by extreme lust for the wrong things in life.
The Bible is clear that God is light. – The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?
If we fill our minds with God’s glorious light, darkness cannot overtake us and we enter God’s stronghold.
This dangerous black hole that Satan has devised reminds me of John Mayer’s song Gravity. The lyrics are as follows:
Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down
Oh, I’ll never known what makes this man
With all the love that his heart can stand
Dream of ways to throw it all away
Whoa, gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down
Oh, twice as much ain’t twice as good
And can’t sustain like one half could
It’s wanting more that’s gonna send me to my knees
Oh twice as much ain’t twice as good
And can’t sustain like one half could
It’s wanting more that’s gonna send me to my knees
Whoa, gravity, stay the hell away from me
Whoa . . .
Substitute the word sin for gravity and you have the nemesis of our culture. My friends I hope this Christmas season you will take some time to reflect on throwing away God’s light in exchange for black sin or instead choosing to cling to the light and walk in it daily. Shine brightly and keep your eyes on the light and you will not be overcome.
John 1:5
. . . The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Have a great weekend and go to church this Sunday!
