Sometimes I get discouraged. When I do, invariably it is because it seems that no matter how hard I work, my goals seem to elude me. Usually in spite of my discouragement (and its companion, poor attitude’), progress is almost always being made, but this good news is overshadowed by the weariness of the battle. In effect we get worn out by the fight and even though we may be winning the battle, it just does not come fast enough to realize that we are winning. It requires faith that the goal will be reached and mental toughness to stay with it, especially when things are really going sour and when caught up in the downward spiral of consecutive discouraging events.
I have often advised people in business not to give up just because they are discouraged, because success is usually right around the corner if they can just hang tough for a little while longer. I believe many a business, important project, and even trying to win an athletic event have been abandoned when the goal line was within sight and theirs for the taking, because discouragement ruled their mental state of mind.
Progress with spiritual work is the same. Satan is known in the Bible as “the discourager”, (among other things), and nothing seems to satisfy him more than seeing us fail in our spiritual lives. The Bible addresses this in no uncertain terms and happily declares victory through Jesus Christ. It is our faith in the Lord that will defeat discouragement in our lives. The Bible instructs us to remain steadfast and immovable’. It tells us to know’ that our work is not in vain in the Lord. This is a good lesson for life in its entirety, don’t you think? If we adhere to these axioms, just imagine what we can accomplish
Try it the next time you are discouraged. Remain steadfast and immovable knowing’ that your work is not in vain. Keep in mind that an attitude like that can only be obtained through faith in the Lord. Victory can be ours in this life in the Lord in spite of the evil that surrounds us. Knowing that the Lord is right by our sides every step of the way as we fight our daily battles shall bring us the victory every time.
1 Cor.58
Therefore my beloved brethren,
Be steadfast, immovable, always
abounding in the work of the Lord,
knowing that your labor is not in
vain in the Lord.
Steafast and immovable
