Few things are more important to a person’s character than their word.
Integrity, honesty, and character are all on the line when we give our word. I will not have friendships with or do business with someone who will tell me one thing and then do another. If someone will not live up to their commitments and/or lies to me, it is nearly impossible for me to ever trust them again. Yes people make mistakes, but if someone lies to you once, mistake or not, how can a person know for sure that they are not just lying again when they tell you something else. The only way I know that reconcillment may occur is for them to apologize for it and mean it, and then tell me the truth for a long, long, long, long time.
It takes much less time to undo the damage of a lie than it does to tell one, and most of the time lies end up in destroying a relationship.
The Bible tells us to let our yes be a yes and our no be a no. This is one of the most important things for Christians to remember. We are instructed to live our lives in such a manner that we will shine as lights for the world. One cannot begin to accomplish that if we do not honor our word. Often it will mean that we must live up to something said in haste. I personally have honored deals that were terrible, but I gave my word and I lived up to it. One good thing about it was it served as a good lesson to think before commitment. If you commit to something and then later after careful thought decide that you do not want to do it after all, ask to get out of it, but if you cannot, then do not argue about it, do not dispute. Simply abide by your word and see the difference it will make when longtime friends and/or business aquaintances honor and respect you and they know when you say something it means something. If they are aware that you are a Christian, that means more to what being a Christian is all about to them than anything.
Phil.2:14
Do all things without complaining
and disputing,
that you may become blameless
and harmless children of God without
fault in the midst of a crooked
and perverse generation, among
whom you shine as lights in the
world.
