I was on a plane one time and was sitting next to a man who had been selected to go on a space mission as an astronaut to conduct experiments in outer space. In outer space pure crystals can be grown because of zero gravity and that is what his experiment was designed to do. He was naturally excited and was talking it up like a jaybird. He was a fascinating conversationalist, and I was totally engrossed from the time we took off and until we landed.

I asked him what he found to be the most interesting thing that he observed from his bird’s yes view of the earth. He responded that it was just beautiful to see the “aura” or the blue ring that encircled the earth, but he then told me that seeing the blackness of outer space was probably the highlight of his trip. He told me that he had never seen inky black darkness like it and mere words could not describe it.

I was thinking about that this morning and visions of hell came to mind. My personal viewpoint of hell, (that is not biblically supported,} is I have come to believe in a hell that will have different degrees of agony. Those who have not done anything heinous will be condemned to a life of utter darkness and loneliness and those who have committed grievous sins will be in constant pain and as Jesus put it there will be gnashing of the teeth and wailing.  Regardless of my “human logic” and vivid imagination there will undoubtedly be great suffering and the darkness will be all-consuming and indescribable with words. I know this because the Bible is clear that God is light and without Him there is no light. Darkness and being alone would fit that scenario.

One thing about it, Hell will be a terrible experience. My astronaut friend was so moved by his trip that he came away from it as a solid Christian and I assume is still a strong believer. His experience was seared into his mind. What a shame that unbelievers everywhere, especially atheists, could not have his experience.

1 John 5:7
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
