I was reading the Bible this morning and happened to come across a passage that intrigued me because I see that same thinking going on today. It is a story of two kings, one was over Judah and the other Israel. They discussed a city which the king of Israel said belonged to him, but the Syrians controlled it. He convinced the king of Judah to join their respective forces and take it back and he agreed.
Before attacking they wanted to inquire of God to see if it was the right move. So the king of Israel called 400 prophets of God (yes men) and all to a man agreed to wage war. There was one prophet, Micaiah, they didn’t consult. The king of Israel said he hated him because his prophecies were always the opposite of everyone else and were always gloomy. But he sent for him and sure enough he said if they went to war they would be defeated. The king of Israel was fit to be tied. He told the king of Judah that was exactly what he always did. He had predicted he would give a bad prophecy and he did.
Micaiah said that he just reported what he heard from God, but the king of Judah threw him in jail and fed him bread and water. I suppose you can guess who won the war. The Syrians also killed the king who had disguised himself and entered the battle where he was fatally wounded and died.
The moral of this story is that one should not go with the majority if it defies the words of God. We have done just that in our “modern” society on homosexuality, abortion, getting drunk or stoned, affirmative action, and so on. If someone stands in a pulpit and tells you there is no hell get up and leave. If they say Jesus is not the Messiah do likewise. If they say the Bible is just a collection of fables written by old men then shake the dust off your feet. The crowd is not always right even if a thousand people believe it and you stand alone.
Stand your own ground! Stand up for what is right! Stand up for Jesus!
II Tim. 4:3
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
