Thanksgiving should be a time of joy. And it is at my household and yesterday we had a great time. We looked at family photos on my smart TV and laughed ourselves silly at old family photos. All the girls went to the salon to get spruced up and the men went for a long cruise in my skiff up the Intercoastal waterway from Jupiter to West Palm Beach and back. It was perfect weather, and many people were on the waterways just enjoying life.
I spoke with a friend of mine who is spending Thanksgiving with his new fiancée and her family. He told me that he was looking forward to it and especially the prospect of the absence of drama that was so prevalent in his own family. It seems his family is riddled with various people thriving on drama at family events and it has been especially bad since his divorce several years ago and they just cannot seem to move on from it.
He asked me if we had drama at these events at my home. I said no but mentioned that in years past we have had some develop with certain family members. One in particular used to choose the Thanksgiving holidays as his time to drink excessively. He would get mad and leave in a huff over the silliest things and I would have to go find him and try to convince him to come back.
Those days are gone, and I don’t miss them. Thanksgiving is a day to thank almighty God for all that He has blessed us with, to be with family and friends and to just have a good time. I hope all of you will try doubly hard to do just that over the holidays and not just them but always. Being thankful isn’t just for the Thanksgiving holiday. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us: . . . give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
When we find ourselves angry, sad, or overwhelmed with burdens and worry, we can praise God for who He is and His promise to never leave us or forsake us. We have been blessed with the free gift of salvation and eternal life! No drama there; just sheer joy!
Colossians 3:15
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
