Yesterday on my way home from a tiring trip to two cities, I stopped in Lake City Florida and met with several people in the Inmate Encounter Prison Ministry concerning developing a plan to take the gospel to every prison in Florida. It was an excellent meeting and we now have clear direction as to how to accomplish our goal.
One of the things I like best about it is we intend to join together with several other ministries to help accomplish this project. While our group is primarily an evangelization effort, we are incorporating ministries that specialize in different areas such as discipleship, prayer, letter writing, Christian book and magazine distribution, reentry preparation programs, reintegration into a church home, and help to find meaningful employment for them.
Those who have it within their hearts to see incarcerated men, women, and juveniles turn from their past and begin their walk with Jesus and continue for the rest of their lives are going to unite in order to achieve a significant common purpose. Instead of trying to be all things to all people, each organization can come together and share its special calling and expertise in order to glorify Christ and teach/preach the Gospel. Our group isn’t about serving a denomination or particular church, and in fact is multi-denominational. It isn’t about enhancing a particular ministry; it is about serving Jesus Christ in obedience.
Oh how I long for the day that Christians all over the world will come together as one to glorify Christ in every area of life. This small prison ministry effort is a good step in the right direction.
