Not quite what He had in mind

A friend of mine wrote and told me that he agreed that we should forgive, but that didn’t necessarily mean that he wanted that person back in his life ever again. I can agree with that statement.

I had an in-law that was as close to a witch and something that rhymed with that word as anyone that I’ve ever met. Her mission in life was to stir up controversy and make life as miserable as she could for as many people as possible. She succeeded with her children, extended family, friends, and was even asked to leave her church because she was stirring the pot there and creating turmoil.

She didn’t like me and I didn’t like her, but I was forced to be around her because of family obligations. She turned her ire on me one time and successfully turned some family members against me for a while and when I found out about it, I forbid her to come to my home and let her know in no uncertain terms exactly how I felt about her.

Eventually in the interest of family, (my wife), I softened my stance and tolerated being around her and even let her come to my home again a couple of times; however she knew how I felt about her and I knew that she felt the same about me. When her husband finally died she went her way and the rest of the family went theirs.

How do we forgive someone like that? I officially forgave her stupidity, ignorance, and mean spirit, but I don’t ever want to be around her again. Hmmm I doubt this is what Jesus had in mind, but try as I might to be like Him, I just can’t seem to get the hang of it

I researched the Bible and found a couple of nuggets to put my mind at ease today. The Bible tells us that in as much as it is up to us we should be at peace with everyone. I am at peace with her now, because I never see her or hear from her. It also warns us to avoid divisive people. I am indeed abiding by that little gem too.

Like my buddy I forgave, but I don’t want this person back in this life or the next.

Is that forgiveness?

Hmmm.

Somehow I don’t think Jesus Christ would think much of this which is why I need His strength every minute of every day…

Titus 3:10
As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him,
