I took a ride with a guy the other day that smelled so bad that I thought I would throw up. In his defense he had made a couple of attempts to mask the odor by hanging one of those little pine tree scent block affairs on his rear view mirror. He also had sprayed himself with so much Right Guard that it made my eyes water, but it was not enough. I hung my head out the window.
I was riding with this guy over to one of my properties to re-repair some sheetrock that had a rust stain that was “bleeding” through the white paint. This same guy had already painted it once and of course the rust stain just came back through in a few weeks and now it needed to be done again. This time I was going with him to ensure that the job was done right.
The first thing that needed to be accomplished was to fix the leak that caused the rust. It emanated from the roof during heavy rainstorms and I had him thoroughly caulk it, and then after sanding the area to remove any existing rust, I had him paint the rust inhibiting product “Kilz” on it to prime it, and apply the white topcoat to finish it off.
I was thinking about this guy this morning and how he tries to superficially deal with his problems. Instead of taking a shower and using soap and hot water to wash away the odor causing bacteria that makes him smell like a stinking wet boar hog, he merely tries to mask over it and cover it up. His M.O. leads to B.O. Instead of having a “method of operation” that gets to the heart of the matter, he tries to take the easy way out and ends up with detestable “body odor”. In like fashion he attempts to hide rust stains by merely painting over them.
I see a correlation to sin. We cannot hide sin by covering it up. We cannot take the easy way out. We must dig deep and attack it at its core, (before it adversely affects our lives and the lives of others).
Do you have a nagging sin that keeps “bleeding” through or perhaps is so blatantly obvious that it stinks to high heaven? If so, spend some time attacking the root of it. Remove the root and the sin will die Don’t forget that God forgives sin and He can cleanse us No need for Right Guard or little pine scent blocks when He is involved
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
