Several people seemed to think that I am against welfare of any kind because of yesterday’s WFTD. Don’t know where that came from, but please allow me to clarify. My personal belief system is that if someone is able bodied and capable of work then he or she should either work or starve. If incapable, then those of us who can help should help!

Please spare me the sob story about the economy. If someone wants to work badly enough, they can find work. It might be a lowly job like cleaning the mortar off bricks with a hatchet in the hot sun alongside a bunch of winos for fifteen dollars a day like my first job in Atlanta, (or worse), but if someone will look hard enough and long enough and swallow some pride, jobs are available and food can be put on the table until something better comes along.

Those who are not able bodied and capable of work should be helped plain and simple. Personally I think individuals should do the bulk of the helping via direct giving or giving to charitable organizations rather than the government. Certainly those with special needs and veterans should have government assistance available, but far too many people simply want a handout and are too lazy to work.

Recently a movement was established to reform welfare by first conducting drug tests on recipients of welfare, but that idea was quickly nixed. It was discovered that government aide was being given to people in jail, people who have been dead for years and yet still receiving welfare checks that are being cashed, food stamps were being traded for wine and beer, and on and on. Those who spoke out against this type of thing and supported welfare reform were quickly labeled a racist of all things??? Or heartless fiend or right wing fanatic, or whatever by those who want the spigot opened even wider in order to garner those block votes.

The Bible tells us to go to the lowly ant as an example of how industrious we should be. Even though there is no ruler (or president Obama) in the ant world to encourage them with a stimulus package or give-away government program, or tax return for those who do not pay taxes, all of the ants go about their work and thus fill their little bellies and prosper. If only everyone would follow their example there is no telling what we could accomplish. We might even avoid saddling our children and their children with insurmountable debt.

The Bible goes into great detail about helping the poor, widows, and those with special needs. It tells us that he who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given. Sounds like a good investment to me.

Sometimes it is difficult to discern who really needs help, but those lazybones who suck the blood out of society should be easy to spot if the politics and class warfare were to be put on a back burner and intelligent discussion would reign, but alas that will probably never happen, at least in this old goat’s lifetime

Matt. 19:21
Jesus said to him, “If you want
to be perfect, go sell what you have
and give to the poor, and you will
have treasure in heaven; and come
follow Me.”
