As a young man I was in numerous fights and won far more than I lost. I suppose I was considered to be a pretty tough customer and not many wanted to challenge me in that regard. At the time I was bar tending in one of the toughest bars in the French Quarter in New Orleans and on many occasions I had to serve as its bouncer too. There were some pretty rough customers that frequented this place, yet I had earned a reputation of not tolerating any nonsense by most of the clientele.
One night I dropped by this bar even though I was not working that night. I noticed a beautiful girl sitting at the bar crying. I went over and sat next to her and started talking to her to see what was up with the crying and to offer my assistance, (yes I did say she was beautiful complete with blonde hair and blue eyes the color of the Caribbean). All of a sudden someone grabbed me by my shoulder length hair and pulled me off the bar stool backwards onto the floor and hit me hard in the mouth. I came up swinging and to my surprise it was a woman.
This was no ordinary woman. She was about five foot eight, weighed every bit of 300 lbs., was muscular, hard as a rock and was built like a Sherman Tank. She was tough as a Marine sergeant too! I fought her all over that bar and she was as savvy of a combatant as nearly anyone I had ever faced. At the end I was successful and (luckily) caught her with an uppercut and knocked her unconscious, but she had managed to get her licks in too and I had several battle scars from our skirmish and definitely knew I had been in a fight.
So what happened to the beautiful babe’? Well as it turns out the babe’ and the Sumo wrestler’ were lovers and this was some kind of Lesbian relationship gone awry. I later surmised that the babe’ had been at the bar crying, because of some kind of lovers spat and I unknowingly had butted in on it. She was not appreciative of my efforts to console her crying; after the fight, she did not try to help me but instead went to the aide of her butch’ lover who was sprawled out on the floor. I had just fought the fight of a lifetime against a woman of all things for nothing. I limped home alone and was sore for two weeks with bruises and cuts.
I woke up in a cold sweat this morning after dreaming half the night about this fight that occurred some forty years ago before I became a Christian. As I was thinking about it, this incident reminded me of a verse in the Bible that speaks to the issue of meddling in someone else’s quarrel. Although I did not knowingly meddle in their quarrel as I did not know the babe’ was there with anyone else especially a Lesbian, I still paid a price similar to that described in Proverbs below for meddling in someone else’s dispute. I suppose the moral of the story is to mind our own business unless we want to get bit; not to mention I should have never been in a bar in that evil situation in the first place
Proverbs 26:17
Like one who seizes a dog by the ears
is a passer-by who meddles in a quarrel?
not his own.
Mind your own business
