Christmas time has a special meaning to people for different reasons. To some it is all about Santa Claus, happy kids, giving and receiving gifts; others recognize it strictly as a religious celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. I believe that Jesus Christ should be the primary focus, but I also believe that He wants us to celebrate His birthday and have a good time. I am not opposed to perpetuating the Santa myth to little kids, provided that they are taught about Jesus and that the entire “reason for the season” and for “Santa” coming in the first place is to celebrate His birth.
Christmas should also be about helping and giving to others including and especially those who are less fortunate. What better way to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ than giving to the poor? Jesus loves the poor and throughout the Bible we are told that they have a special place in His heart. This season we should remember that all that we have comes from the Father. He has blessed us mightily and we should share our blessings with others. Do your part to help those who are less fortunate and watch God bless you even more for it…
In that light, God actually looks at our giving to the poor as a “LOAN”
from us to Him of which He fully intends to repay. I find that odd and was shocked to read this. I know in my heart that I have never considered helping the poor to be a “loan” to God and most certainly is not my motivation for helping the poor. I do want God to be proud of me and I want to please Him and I know that this is one way to accomplish that. I am well aware that one cannot out-give God and He gives blessings disproportionately to us over and above everything we give Him; however that never really enters my mind as I give to the poor.
Whatever your motivation consider helping the poor as a major part of your Christmas budget strategy this year and watch God bless your life in the coming year as never before.
Proverbs 19:17
He who has pity on the poor
lends to the Lord,
and He will pay back what he
has given.
