I vowed not to watch the news but find myself glued to the television watching the reports about Katrina. As expected it has turned negative.
It has gone from the media covering stories of amazing heroic acts of those trying to rescue the refugees to criticism of their efforts for not being fast enough. One must wonder how these news gurus and self appointed experts would handle it differently. 90,000 square miles of land is totally devastated. Water is still pouring into the city from the largest saltwater lake in the country. The roads are all but completely impassable. There is no infrastructure including power, communications capability, water or sewer. Thousands are stranded. Thugs are roaming the streets looting, raping, stealing drugs from drugstores and hospitals, and shooting at rescue helicopters and police with stolen guns from gun shops. The people, (who refused to evacuate after continual pleading by authorities for almost a week), are screaming, cursing, and shooting at the very people that are trying to help them.
The media is saying where are the authorities? Why aren’t they helping these people? Duhhh! – they have a few obstacles and problems that are slowing them down, haven’t you noticed? The media is also now fanning the flames of gasoline shortages, (and thereby causing them), as people nationwide are rushing out to stock up on gas driven like frenzied crazed animals by the constant blare of the media. The legislators will be back in town today and now the Democrats will blame the Republicans and ultimately it will be President Bush’s fault that the hurricane hit in the first place. The press will have a field day with that one for months to come. If you ask me, (or not), the media is what is wrong with this country. If it is not negative, it is not news. Rage is nothing new. In Psalms the Bible asks, “Why do the nations rage?” I guess it was the same 2000 years ago and nothing much has changed.
All of this chaos creates uncertainty. People are afraid. We do live in uncertain times, and that is why it is so important to draw close to God. He offers hope in the most trying times. He is the steadfast Rock; He is our salvation. Look to the steady reassurance that He is still in control of “your” life; that he loves you enough to send His Son to die for your sins, and put your trust in the fact that He has promised that soon He will bring peace and remove us from the craziness of this world…
Psalm 16:1
Preserve me, O God,
for in you I put my trust.
