When I was a kid I used to go barefoot quite often. Oddly enough I felt it was kind of a badge of honor and a measure of one’s toughness to walk around barefoot. My feet got toughened up considerably, but candidly speaking, I did not ever get them tough enough to walk barefoot on a rocky road or hot pavement without experiencing considerable pain. I of course would never have admitted it, nor would I ever have let anyone see me in this “weak” condition. If anyone was looking at me as I encountered a rocky road or hot pavement, the “tough guy” mentality in me would fortify me enough to “grin and bear it”, I would walk right through it without wincing, sucking up the pain enough to mask the fact that my feet were hurting so bad that I wanted to cry.

As I look back on it, I remember on occasion that I did find some nice soft cool grass to walk on, but I remember most the rocky roads and hot pavement. Now I ask myself why I or anyone in their right mind would want to go barefoot when perfectly good shoes were readily available to protect our feet. There is no good answer. It was a stupid thing to do.

This reminds me of trying to walk through life without Jesus Christ.
There are going to be some nice cool green grass fields to walk through on occasion, but as we all know, there will be some difficult rocky roads and hot pavement that must be traversed to get through this evil world. Considerable pain that is unnecessary to endure is one’s only reward for trying to make it alone. Jesus Christ has offered His mighty help and all we have to do to obtain it is ask Him. Now what is the smart course of action? When you get old and look back on life, don’t regret not taking advantage of this wonderful offer. Be strong in the Lord…

Eph. 6:10

Finally my brethren, be strong

in the Lord and in the power of His

might.

Put on the whole armor of God,

that you might be able to stand

against the wiles of the devil.
