A mean spirit is a dark spirit and dark spirits come from below not above. I am sometimes mean-spirited although I do not like that side of myself. If you do as I do on occasion and catch yourself being mean-spirited, then try to recognize it for what it is. Christians should not be mean-spirited even when wronged. Much of my problem with this sin comes to light when I am wronged by someone. When It happens I cannot easily forgive, in fact I want to get even, not forgive. This is a fleshly response and is not what God intends.
Jesus forgave us our sins and instructed that we should forgive others their sins against us. In fact in our “model prayer” He instructs us to ask for forgiveness “as we forgive those who have sinned against us”.
Being kind, forgiving, making fun of people, and not setting ourselves up as a judge are sometimes difficult. As with conquering other sins however; it leads to a happier and more fruitful life and we should give it all we have to succeed in this difficult area, (and then some by asking God in our prayers to use His mighty power to strengthen our character and allow us to succeed).
Ephesians 4:32
And be kind to one another,
tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, even as God forgave
you.
