My life as well as millions of others was adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina. These storms are unbelievable and they bring untold misery upon the masses. I was watching television coverage and was actually moved to tears as I listened to an elderly man describe his situation. He was frightened to death of the hurricane that was bearing down on him. He was told he had to leave his trailer but he had absolutely nowhere to go. His voice faltered and he began to weep. This pitiful old man who appeared to be in his eighties, was all alone, and was frightened out of his wits. He had no money and no way out.
I wonder if God ever weeps. The answer is yes – maybe… Jesus who is God wept when told that Lazarus, a friend of Jesus whom he liked very much, had died; this in spite of the fact that He already knew He would raise Lazarus from the dead. I wonder why this is in the Bible. Was Jesus weeping because of Lazarus or because of the pain it was causing his loved ones? Is this passage in the Bible to demonstrate to us that God loves us so much that He actually weeps when we experience bad times? Or was this the flesh side of Jesus? We were made in the image of God and one could probably assume that the image includes anger, sorrow, happiness and other emotions we experience.
We are told that when we get to heaven there will be no more tears. I assume we will be shielded from seeing the misery endured by those poor souls who are in Hell forever. Undoubtedly God will however still see their misery and hear their anguish, and I wonder if he will feel any compassion for them. I do not know the answer to that one, but I feel certain that He is experiencing sorrow as He watches the havoc being rained down on New Orleans and the Mississippi gulf coast…Surely God feels the anguish of the righteous souls who are suffering and as bad as it may get we are assured that God hears our cry….
Psalm 34:17
The righteous cry out,
And the Lord hears,
And delivers them out of all
their troubles.
The Lord is near to those who
Have a broken heart,
And saves such as have a
contrite spirit.
