One thing that I think distinguishes my business philosophy from many less successful business managers is that I concentrate on the long term. I try my best to think long term and do not try to take shortcuts that will reward me for a moment, but will cost me in the long run. An example might be trying to sell an easily led customer more products and/or services than they really need. Some potential clients put tremendous trust in my recommendations. Essentially they tell me to tell them what they need and they will issue the purchase order. I could add some items to the ticket and increase my sale, but long term it would be discovered that I betrayed their trust and eventually my reputation for being honest and having the highest integrity would be
ruined. I take the long term approach and do not sell them anything
that I do not think they will need. As a result word gets around that I am honest and can be trusted to do the right thing and my sales continue to climb each year far exceeding the small “one time hit” that might come from loading up a customer with items they really do not need in a moment of greed.
In our personal quest to succeed in life, we should take a long term approach as well. There are many decisions that are made daily whereby we can take a long term or short term approach. A simple example might be to skip church and go fishing. Short term I might enjoy my favorite hobby fishing; however long term I will miss the blessings that come from worship. A more severe example is that two people who are married to different people might become attracted to each other and burn with lust for each other. Next they take the dangerous step of “enjoying” a short term gratification of their moment of physical lust fulfillment.
Long term they will suffer the guilt and severe consequences of adultery which could ultimately destroy them. Always remember that eternity is forever; life on this earth is like a vapor.
God punishes sin and blesses the righteous person. God’s blessings are worth far more than all of the short term “gain” that the world has to offer. A vivid example of that is when Jesus was being tempted in the desert. Satan essentially offered Him the entire world and all it had to offer, but Jesus knew that all of the world and everything in it will soon be destroyed, but the kingdom of God will reign forever. Live your life like God is watching your EVERY move and hearing your EVERY word.
Guess what? He is…I’ll take long term in paradise any day…
Psalm 34:15
The eyes of the Lord are on the
righteous,
And His ears are open to their
cry.
The face of the Lord is against
those who do evil,
To cut off the remembrance of
them from the earth.
