“Girlie” emotion

Finally the emotion has died down about Terry Schiavo and now the pope is center stage with the media. It might be good to calmly reflect on that situation one last time to see if everyone’s perspective is the same now that our illustrious media has moved on to covering every conceivable angle of the pope’s life and death and is no longer daily whipping up emotions by vilifying Terry’s husband and/or her mother father brother and sister dependent upon the politics of the “talking head” or two bit politician or “reverend” that wanted their two minutes of fame, glory, and consultation fee.

I received a few e-mails agreeing and disagreeing with my position on Terry. Some were charged with what I term “girlie’ emotion and devoid of logic; others seemed to take an entirely secular approach. I would ask everyone to think about the situation from a totally different perspective. Forget Terry’s husband, forget the family, forget the media, forget the politicians, forget Jesse Jackson, forget Terry’s last wishes. Cleanse your mind of all the secular worldly considerations that distract us from what is really important, and that would be where does God fit into this? As I reflect on this THE MOST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION, I ask myself, now what do you suppose GOD’S PURPOSE in this matter is? Why do you suppose Terry did not just die when she suffered her heart attack? Why did God allow her to remain in a state whereby her vital organs were functional including her heart beating on its own, she was breathing on her own, her kidneys and liver were functioning on their own, whereby all she needed, (like the rest of us), to “survive’ was for someone to provide her with food and water? Did He compassionately intend for her to remain alive so she could help the family endure her loss and hang on to some hope be it false or not? Was it punishment for some sin? Was it to bring someone closer to God and perhaps save their soul? The answer is we do not know. God did not take Terry completely from this earth when she had her heart attack for His own purpose and we may never know why.

We all have a purpose in life. I would hate to be the person that removed that tube, the judge who ordered it, or the husband and his lawyer that fought for it. We are not God and it is not our purpose to prematurely end life. Yes there is technology today that will keep the body “pumping” and unnecessarily prolong body functions when someone has already died and I am not opposed to “unplugging” in these situations; Terry’s situation was not like that. She would be alive today serving God’s purpose if it were not for secular courts intervening and sentencing her to death. Our nation’s court system authorized citizens to kill a defenseless person by starvation and water deprivation. The next judge may deem a spouses request to end the life of a quadriplegic due to their interpretation of their quality of life. Should we kill them too? That was Hitler’s solution and he began his holocaust by first getting rid of everyone with an infirmity. I suspect he will think about that for eternity in the pits of Hell.

This admittedly is a difficult question. President Bush said it best that we should err in favor of life if there is a question. Perhaps you are convinced that in this situation there was no question. If so I suppose we just will have to agree to disagree on this one…I believe He left Terry in this state to serve a purpose and who are we to deny it?

Romans 9:15

For He says to Moses, “I will

have mercy on whomever I will have

mercy, and I will have compassion

on whomever I will have compassion”.

so then it is not of him who wills,

nor of him who runs, but of God who

shows mercy.

For the Scripture says to the

Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I

have raised you up, that I may show

My power in you and that My name

may be declared in all the earth.

therefore He has mercy on

whom He wills, and whom He wills

He hardens.

But indeed O man, who are you

to reply against God? Will the thing

formed say to Him who formed it,

Why have you made me like this?

What if God, wanting to show

His wrath and to make His power

known, endured with much longsuffering

the vessels of wrath

prepared for destruction, and that

He might make known

the riches of His glory on the vessels

of mercy, which He had prepared

beforehand for glory.
