Mean streets

One of our church members, (husband of the lady my wife sits next to in choir), was the victim of road rage last week. He was stopped at a stop sign. The guy behind him apparently thought that he did not take off fast enough from the stop sign. He got angry and followed him home, harassing him as he went. When the church member got out of his car, he sent his son inside and walked around the back of the guy’s car to write down his tag number to report him. The man put his car in reverse and ran over the church member. He broke his back and neck and the church member died two days later.

We live on mean streets anymore. Not that long ago if someone got angry in traffic, at worse they might flip the other driver a visual of their IQ, but today they are liable to shoot you or run you down like a possum crossing the road. My wife got confused in traffic in Miami the other day. Traffic was whizzing by on the left and right. She was lost and scared in the fast traffic and was trying to read the signs and sure enough some hothead pulled up beside her and started cursing her and showing how high his IQ was with his middle finger.

What is wrong with society? They are not focused on God; they are focused on themselves. Too many of us simply care about ourselves with little regard for anyone else. If you think about it, they seem to think like the following: How dare you delay me one minute! You stupid idiot, get off the roads, these are MY roads. If you are too stupid to find your way, I will not help you find your way or slow down and let you in, I’ll just run you down and kill you.

God instructs us to be gentle with one another, as Jesus was kind, forgiving and gentle. Unfortunately this message is lost upon too many people, me included on occasion. Slow down a little and be tolerant particularly of older people who are having a hard time with the fast traffic around them.
