Did you know that the Bible states that those who spare the rod HATE their children? It goes on to say that he who loves them disciplines them promptly. (Proverbs 13:24) The next time you cannot bear to punish your little kid, remember this passage and remember that the Bible does not err. It has become socially unacceptable to discipline children. Corporal punishment is akin to child abuse. Indeed in todays times one must be careful about using the rod to punish a child or jail might be your next home.
Timeouts are popular now. Indeed my children would like to have called a timeout from a belt popping them when I was reinforcing consequences of bad behavior, but todays popular timeout punishment is depriving a child from watching television for a few minutes. (What a horrible punishment!) Unfortunately labeling as Neanderthals those who use corporal punishment as the preferred tool to teach kids right from wrong and replacing it with Dr. Spock hogwash is producing an unruly unmanageable generation of kids who have no respect for anyone or anything. Children cannot raise themselves. It states in Ecclesiastes that not one person on the earth is good all of the time. Yep, that is right; this passage includes your precious and cute little children and mine. Children must be taught right from wrong and they must be taught that there are consequences for bad behavior. It is a parents responsibility.
We also have a responsibility to teach them about God. We as parents have passed on the sin gene through the ages beginning with Adam and Eve. The only cure for this disease is Jesus Christ. Kids will not learn this on their own volition, so take them to Sunday school and church beginning at an early age. The Bible teaches that if a child is brought up to love the Lord, they will not depart from it when they grow old. As I look at kids with blue hair, tattoos, piercings and rings on tongues and elsewhere on their bodies, who thumb their nose at authority and rebel against decency and laugh at God and Godly people, I do not have to wonder why they did are as they are. Bad kids usually are the result of bad parents. Not always, but almost.
One day your cute little toddler will be full grown. How they will turn out is determined by the training and love that is given to them as a child. If you love them, you will discipline them. Hopefully they will respect you and authority. They will have a deep abiding love for Jesus and will accomplish great things during their brief stay in the world and will enjoy paradise for eternity…
Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all your
heart,
And lean not on your own
understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge
Him,
And He shall direct your
paths.
How well do you know the Bible?
The fifth commandment deals with kids honoring their parents. It is the only commandment that comes with a promise of reward for obedience of it. What is the reward?
