Lately I have been spending quite a lot of time with someone who is much younger than I am. I have noticed that this person is very impatient and seems to worry about everything. He agonizes over every potentiality. Of course most of his worries will never materialize and those that do willbe long forgotten before he knows it. I remember being just like that. As I continue to get more grey hair I seem to worry much less and can actually say with a straight face that I have begun to possess some patience. Old age has its benefits, because life is much better without worrying oneself silly and endlessly fretting about everything imaginable.
I have tried to counsel this young person, but as youngsters often do, it appears to go in one ear and right out the other. (I sometimes wonder if anything is inside that thick head to slow down the message.) I cannot criticize much because I was always the same. The Bible tells us that we should not worry. Things will work out and people who have lived for many years have seen their worries disappear countless times before and know thatthings will eventually work out, albeit it may mean some discomfort for a while.
Grin and bear it, or better as my boxing coach used to tell me “Roll with the punch”. Failure to heed this advice, and failure to bend occasionally and instead standing rock solid could result in a solid blow to the jaw and a visit to the mat flat on the old back.Rolling with the punch enables the fight to continue on to victory.
Don’t worry and be happy as the song goes. You will enjoy life much more. God loves us and has His watchful eye upon us all of the time. If that does not give you comfort, I honestly do not know what will.
