How long……Since you have told your parents that you love them? Gone by to see them? Called them? If you are like me, your answer is, too long. I have the excuse that I am so busy with so many projects going that it is understandable if I forget to call. What kind of excuse is that? Not much of one.

Some of us may be mad at our parents for one thing or other and have cut them off altogether. Often it is something silly. Our parents, like us, are not perfect. We should not hold them to that standard. The older they are, the more set in their ways they seem to become.
Sometimes I have to grit my teeth in order to hold my tongue. I hold different views than they do on many subjects. I am more tolerant, hence considered a moderate, and to arch conservatives that is relevant to treason. My sons probably consider me an arch- conservative.

In the end we should honor them, respect them, and obey them, provided it is in the Lord. The Bible tells us that in more than one place. In fact it is the 5th Commandment of the Ten Commandments and it offers a reward for obeying it, (things will be well with us and we will have a longer life). The young generation that is springing forth now seems disrespectful of their parents. Perhaps they will not have long fruitful lives because of it.

By the way if you are a parent, you have responsibilities too. You are not to provoke your children to wrath and should raise them up with spiritual training and teach them respect for the Lord.

Ephesians 6:1
Children, obey your parents in
the Lord, for this right.
“Honor your father and
mother,” which is the first
Commandment with promise:
“that it may be well with you and
you may live long on the earth,”
And you fathers do not
Provoke your children to wrath, but
Bring them up in the training and
admonition of the Lord.
