I once had a Kingfisher hanging out at my house. I watched him over a period of several years diving and swooping down into our pond to catch small fish and minnows. One day I had some workmen over at my house.
One of them spotted my old friend the Kingfisher. He pulled a 22 caliber rifle from his beat up pickup truck, took aim, and squeezed the trigger. And just like that the Kingfisher was dead. I was not there when it happened, but was told about it by one of the other workmen. I was sick to my stomach. The Kingfisher was a beautiful bird. It was not edible, it is against the law to kill one, or mount one. It was senseless to kill this bird. I am told that after he shot it, he simply looked at it, laughed about it, and then threw the dead bird into the creek. I know that it was just a bird, but I think that it was a wicked act just the same.
Why do human beings commit senseless, wicked acts? I do not understand it.
