Fear is something that causes dread or apprehension. According to surveys, some of the most common fears are of death, ghosts, flying, the existence of evil powers, the unknown, cockroaches, spiders, snakes, heights, water, enclosed spaces, caves, tunnels, bridges, needles, social rejection, failure, examinations, nuclear war, terrorism, gangs, violence, pain, cancer, and public speaking. I was going to include a list of phobias this morning but when I Googled it I found literally hundreds of them and I didn’t want to scare anyone with such a huge list.
The most fear I’ve known was when my middle son was in his early teens and had gone outside to play during a big snowstorm. He was gone for quite some time and nightfall started descending upon us and he still hadn’t come home. I frantically looked for him and went to my neighbor’s iced over pond and saw that it had large holes broken through it. He and a friend had thrown large rocks on it to break holes in it. One very large hole looked to me like they might have walked out onto the ice and broken through.
I panicked and was frantic with fear for him and was just before jumping in and diving below the icy surface to look for him when I found him walking down the road, (he’d found a lost puppy and returned it to a neighbor in the blinding snow). Man was I glad to see him!
I have personally faced death more times than I care to remember and have discovered that I don’t fear it at all. My good friend Jack – “Murf the Surf” – Murphy explains it as something not being “wired right in my brain”; (classic case of the “pot” calling the kettle black). I think it’s more a case of my strong faith in God.
It’s not reasonable for a person of faith to walk around in fear. I feel sorry for those who walk around being afraid of everything under the sun including their own shadow. Alas, it is a fact though that no matter how tough we may be, we all feel afraid at some point in our lives – whether it’s a gnawing, anxious feeling or a paralyzing phobia.
The Bible has much to say about fear and while it is quite natural to experience fear in some areas like when one steps on a snake, YEOW! – The only fear that is encouraged in the Bible according to my study is the fear of the Lord.
But rather than me pontificate on it this morning I suggest that you read the following Scriptures to find your comfort from the One who can always allay your fears, provided you will invite Jesus Christ into your heart and allow Him to sooth your soul and give you His peace.
