I have just spent nearly two weeks with my kids and grandkids on vacation. Mark Twain once said that he understands why animals eat their young.

I can relate

Just kidding, while there have been a few moments over the past couple of weeks when I could see where those words could be written, I must say that overall it was an incredibly fun and rewarding experience.

Our family is close. We have owned several family businesses and my wife and boys have worked with me all of their lives up until my retirement last year.

I consider it one of the best things that God ever blessed me with to be able to work every day alongside my family. It was a blessing from God for me to be able to work with my kids and watch them mature into men and good businessmen at that.

Conventional wisdom and business books state that families cannot work well together. It was not true in our case. Family businesses generally turn family members against each other with jealousies etc. but not so in our case. I am told that it is unusual for families to take vacations together once the children are grown with families of their own and that they grow apart. We take vacations together every year and it is more fun to do so.

If your family is not close at this time, I encourage you to work towards unifying it, because it does not get any better on this earth than spending time with your family.

God has blessed me enormously in many ways but none better than with my children and their children. The verse below has special meaning to me, but when you think about God being our Father, it takes on even more meaning. Think about it

Proverbs 17:6
Children’s children are the
crown of old men.
And the glory of children is
their father.
