Sometimes it seems that the evil people in this world get away with their evil deeds over and over again. In fact it seems that the more wicked that they become, the more they prosper. I am exposed to the tabloids, because my wife buys one of every flavor prior to every flight we make together. Often as we prepare to land, I thumb through them and am amazed how they cover the same famous celebrities and their wicked, wicked ways over and over and over again. The same people are in the tabloids year after year and the extra publicity just seems to get them bigger and bigger movie or record contracts as if they are being rewarded for their wicked behavior and evil lifestyle.
The Bible tells us that yes the sinner may enjoy the pleasures of earthly life for a time despite their continual sinning, yet our righteous God will eventually and certainly vindicate Himself with the righteous. The sinner may do well despite his sin, but the righteous will do better, enjoying his peace and joy of God in his heart in this life AND the next to come.
Not so with the evil person. The verse below has a simile in it, “shadow”. We all know that a shadow vanishes when exposed to the light of the sun and leaves no trace. This illustrates the temporary and fleeting nature of the life of the wicked which will disappear when the light of the Lord exposes them for what they are at judgment time.
King Solomon warns us not to be deceived by this phenomenon and do not believe just because this process is not speedy, that He will not fulfill His righteous judgment with certainty. A sentence delayed is not synonymous with justice forgotten. Though their days are prolonged in the end it will not be well with them. And if it really bugs you, know that the lifestyle of evil has no real joy or peace about it even in this life.
Eccl. 8:11
Because the sentence against an
evil work is not executed speedily,
therefore the heart of the sons of
men is fully set in them to do evil.
Though a sinner does evil a hundred
times and his days are prolonged,
yet I surely know that
it will be well with those who fear
God, who fear before Him.
But it will not be well with the
wicked; nor will he prolong his days
which are as a shadow, because he does
not fear before God.
