I had a buddy come down for a visit this weekend and unfortunately he did not have very much time to visit. Consequently we were very rushed and it soon became obvious that we could not accomplish all that we wanted to accomplish during his short stay. Saturday night I looked at my wife and told her that I thought I would skip church on Sunday in order to spend more time with my buddy. She rolled her eyes and shook her head. As you might recall I did that the previous weekend and had a miserable day fishing and vowed not to ever do it again and here it was the very next weekend and I was doing it again.

That night I had horrible dreams all night long and woke up in a cold sweat on several occasions. I cannot recall the dreams entirely, but I was on the run for my life all night long. I distinctly remember that the reason I was being pursued was that I was skipping church. I remember a kid I got in a fight with in the eighth grade pulling off his glasses and challenging me to fight again. I won that battle in the eighth grade, but for some reason in my dream I knew I was going to get the heck beat out of me this time. I clenched my teeth so much during the night that my jaws were actually sore the next morning. My bed and pillow were soaking wet from being in a cold sweat. I awoke early and told my wife I was getting my tail in church and to get up and get dressed; time was a wasting… I arose and got dressed and went downstairs to the cabana apartment that my buddy was staying in to tell him I was going to church and I encouraged him to accompany me.

He was a sleepy head and groggily said to go on and he would see me when I got back. I told him I would leave the main house unlocked and to go up and have some coffee when he got up and I would be back before he even knew it. My wife and I went on to church and had a wonderful time worshipping, singing and praising the Lord. When we returned home I discovered that when my wife exited the main house she had turned on the security alarm like she always does. Oops

Yes my buddy set the alarm off when he went upstairs to get coffee. Yes the security company called and asked for the security code and he could not give it to them. Yes the police came and questioned him as to why he was in my house. Yes the alarm siren kept blaring even after the police left as the motion detectors kept sensing his presence moving about my house. Yes my buddy was a nervous camper and seemed rather ragged which was a stark contrast between the peaceful and joyful demeanor exhibited by my wife and me who had been to church. Although I saw the humor in it, I’m not sure he did.

Hey buddy, you should go to church on Sunday or bad things happen; I have learned my lesson; how about you? The Bible tells us that God seeks people to be His worshippers. If He seeks, trust me He will find And when He does you should be worshipping in spirit and truth and not catching up on some sleep, or fishing, or whatever

John 4:23
But an hour is coming and now is, when the true
worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth;
for such people the Father seeks to be His worshippers.
God is spirit and those who worship Him must worship
in spirit and truth.
