I am constantly amazed at people’s attitudes about heeding warnings about hurricanes. Several of my close friends in the Keys decided to ignore warnings and evacuation mandates and ride out the recent hurricane. Yesterday off and on throughout the day during the height of the storm I spoke with several of them and to a person they were regretting having made that decision. Before the storm, to a person I tried to personally convince them to leave and all refused. It is almost as if they have to actually get in harm’s way in the “eye of the storm”
before they wake up and realize that it is serious and they could lose their life over nothing. It would seem that they could look into the future a little and envision what it is going to be like when the hurricane hits with strong raging winds, unprecedented lightening strikes, rain, surge flooding, and sitting in the pitch black dark with no electricity hoping a tornado does not blow you away, or the roof collapse, and/or the house be swept away. Why would anyone elect to stay and ride it out? Don’t ask me I cannot figure it out…
I suspect it was the same in Noah’s day when he warned of the flood. I think I remember from the Bible that he preached for 120 years without a single convert aside from eight members of his immediate family. The same holds true about heaven and hell. I am convinced there are many who realize that they need Jesus Christ in order to face eternity, yet for one reason or another refuse to make their decision. Jesus told us to prepare for His return. He went on to say that He will return as a thief in the night. No one will be expecting Him. People will be going their merry way getting married, working, partying down and skating through life. Then the storm will hit those who are not reunited with our Savior during the Rapture and it will be too late. This storm will last for the rest of eternity. I wonder if any of these people can envision ahead of time how terrible it will be to be eternally separated from God, living forever in total darkness all alone listening to weeping and gnashing of teeth of other lost souls who rejected the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for them with His life. It is so easy to become a Christian and yet it seems to be so difficult for so many to make that decision. That is a somber thought…
Matt.24:44
Therefore you also be ready,
for the Son of Man is coming at an
hour you do not expect.
