As I browsed through the news this morning I reflected on the possibility of a civil war. Angry mobs chasing their political opponents out of restaurants, movie theaters, and through the streets screaming at them because they do not like their politics is being encouraged by mainstream media, the radical members of congress, Hollywood haters, and of course the rest of the anti-Trump thug throng.
In America we have always had debates and heated exchanges expressing differing issues, which were settled by elections. But it seems now the angry leftists who lost their power in recent elections don’t want to accept their losses in the elections. It insults the intellect that they foolishly think they can win any issue using such tactics. From a personal standpoint every time I see a throng of Hispanics border crossers screaming obscenities and demanding that they be allowed to break our laws and enter the country illegally, it solidifies my resolve to resist whatever they are selling. They aren’t winning fans with such conduct.
Early in my business career a hugely successful Army general boiled it down for me in one illustration. He said to take a piece of string and lay it down on a table. He then instructed that I should try to push the string across the table. It bunches up and proves near impossible to do. He then instructed to take the string and pull it around the table. It glides smoothly. His point was that you don’t get anywhere by trying to push people; instead, we should lead people.
My friend John Maxwell recently gave me a copy of a book that he wrote entitled, “Everyone Communicates – Few Connect.” What a great title for the times in which we live. Perhaps Maxine Waters the congresswoman calling for demonstrators to harass her opponents wherever they might go should read a copy. Does anyone with any intelligence think they will win someone over to their way of thinking by screaming obscenities and dropping the F bomb and chasing their family out of a restaurant and then camping out their residence?
Threatening someone’s family and similar tactics will ultimately result in violence; count on it. As the rhetoric increases the psychos come out and usually bring guns with them. One recent example was the guy that tried to kill all the Republicans on a charity softball team. The media had him so stoked that he resorted to murder and Steve Scalise very nearly died after being shot by him. The same was true when a man walked into the Family Research Council’s building and began shooting the place up after reading on the leftist website of the Southern Poverty Law Center that the organization was a hate group. The SPLC is the hate group not the Family Research Council, but that nut was convinced he was doing the right thing.
So, could we have civil war in this country? Of course. Our country has become too divisive and the rhetoric is at fever pitch. There are those who could care less what the majority wants, they want what they want and think everyone else is a moron and deplorable. If they cannot win at the ballot box, they will begin taking the fight to the streets. That approach will not be tolerated and if a fight is what they want, they will lose again.
I pray it doesn’t come to that. I pray for civility, but I’m not sure many in society even know how to be civil. I pray for revival, allowing kids to pray in schools, teaching American history again, and an honest media. Most of all I pray that folks will follow the teaching of Jesus. If only we could accept his approach. Do you know what the essence of all biblical laws and prophets is?
Matthew 7:12
“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.”
