Not surprisingly the Bible admonishes us not to gossip. In fact God views this with such seriousness that the Bible ordains that a man cannot become a deacon in the church if they or their wife are a gossip. It is one of the qualifying factors in selecting deacons, right along with having good character, avoiding alcohol and other characteristics that God considers important for His ordained church leaders. Some people feel an incessant urge to gossip with anyone who will listen. Most of the time the story becomes so distorted that it does not resemble the truth, especially after it has spread to other gossips who add their own caveat to the mix.
Everyone knows someone who just seems to delight in telling everything they know to anyone who will listen. Whenever anyone begins talking about someone, invariably I wonder what they say about me when I am not around. It is my belief that if someone will talk about others when they are not around, they will certainly do the same with me. As with most sins there are consequences because of them. Reputations have been destroyed; friendships destroyed, and live adversely affected by flapping tongues. Gossip has no redeeming factors, only negative. One thing certain, gossip cannot occur unless at least two people are involved. Without a listener gossip falls on deaf ears. In other words, dont participate by listening, and certainly do not perpetuate it by telling others.
Every business has people in it that will spread news faster than a CEOs formal announcement. Every manager knows who they are and sometimes will pass on information to them just for sport and to see where it goes and how the story ends up when it gets back to them.. The news that they spread is seldom spread accurately and most of the time they do not have a clue as to what they are talking about. They take a snippet of information that is true and then ad-lib until it does not resemble the facts. Sound familiar? It should because that is exactly how satan performs his daily routine and has for thousands of years. The best advice is just to keep our mouths and ears shut about others and their affairs. If the party wants it broadcast, they will do so themselves and/or enlist others to do so.
Proverbs 18:27
He who has knowledge spares
his words,
And a man of understanding is
of a calm spirit.
Even a fool is counted wise
when he holds his peace;
When he shuts his lips, he is
considered perceptive.
How well do you know the Bible?
When Jesus went into Gethsemane for prayer prior to His ordeal on the cross, He took three disciples with Him. Who were they?
