Marriage

The Bible teaches that marriage is sacred and binding. When I was a kid, divorce was a thing of great shame and few took this course. Today it is common and something like 52% of all marriages end up in divorce.
Hollywood sets the bad example with most “stars” having multiple marriages. This week my wife and I had our 34th anniversary. I guess being married that long is kind of rare anymore. How did we accomplish that?

Give and take. In order to succeed in marriage one cannot always have their own way. Occasionally each side must give in, sometimes mightily.
Faults must be overlooked and good points must be thought of often. We all make mistakes and when we do we must apologize and then make an effort not to make the same mistake again. All of the foregoing is helpful, but I think the secret lies in the mind. It is in attitude.
What is your attitude towards marriage? Is marriage sacred and binding?
If so, divorce will not be an option. Everyone will be down at some point in their marriage. It is at those times when effort on both partner’s parts must be expended. Chances are if you are not determined to make a go of it no matter what, then you will not.

Everyone has feelings that can be hurt. It is easy to hurt someone but often difficult to apologize. Pride got us in the mess that we are in today beginning in the Garden of Eden. Pride can destroy a marriage too. God intended for us to enjoy marriage, indeed it states that finding a good wife is a blessing from God. I’m sure that the same can be said of a husband too. We should be thankful to God for our blessings, and not take them for granted. Attitude is so important in our lives. Do you think of your spouse as a great treasure? Stop laughing and be serious for a moment. God states that “He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22.
