It has been said that there is nothing more important than how we spend our time. Time is generally acknowledged to be our most treasured commodity. It is irreplaceable, meaning lost time cannot ever be replaced. I used to tell my employees to get there fifteen minutes early to be on time and anything after that , meant you were late and I enforced it!.

Perhaps the irony of all ironies is that time is meaningless to God. He invented time for us. I believe this was done to give us a chance to be reconciled to Him. The past, present, and future all run together for Him and He looks at all simultaneously in “real time”. To those of us who have been driven by the clock and deadlines it is an amazing concept. Nonetheless there is no need for watches in heaven, and I doubt the word will even exist there.

Eternity is a strange concept to those of us who look at life actuarially. This means that on average a person lives to just a short 79.9 years, and from the moment we are born, time begins to start running out for us. Thinking people understand that this mandates that we better get “cracking” while here because time does not for anyone or anything including achieving.

One thing that I’ve learned is that time passes quickly and the older one gets, the faster it seems to pass. I’ve told aspiring entrepreneurs for decades: “There is only one of you, and there is a finite amount of time allowed to you to accomplish your goals, thus it becomes imperative that you spend your allotted time wisely”.

There is of course nothing more important in our brief existence than making peace with our God. He will not allow us to spend eternity with Him in His heaven unless and until the price has been paid for breaking his Holy laws, (sin). We have all sinned and Jesus of course paid that price for all believers, and it is imperative that we confess our sins to Him, ask for His forgiveness and acknowledge that He died on a cross and took the punishment for those sins, (no matter how great, or seemingly minor they might be) in order that we can be reconciled to Him. We must believe that after He died He was resurrected three days later, and at this very moment is alive and sitting on His throne in heaven.

Finally, we are to make Him LORD of our life and follow Him and not the world and all of its lusts. So today when you make out your schedule to maximize use of your most precious commodity – time – think eternity. Do you want to do something today that will affect the well-being of yourself, your family, and even folks you don’t know forever?

If so, focus on Jesus and building His Kingdom where the fruit of your labor will be everlasting. If not, then of course you can always focus on building your personal kingdom including your portfolio, the big house with the swimming pool, your golf game, and all the toys and prestige that this “vaporesque” life can offer. If you choose that foolish route though, just remember that TIME will rob you of every last bit of it much sooner than you might realize.

Hmmm . . . Looking at it from this perspective makes me realize that time can be our greatest friend, or our worst enemy. Make the best use of your greatest friend time today by serving the Lord. And thank God he has allowed you yet another day to affect your well-being for all of eternity. Selah . . .

Luke 10:27
“He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'”

Have a great weekend and go to church this Sunday!
