I think that being humble is difficult for some people. All one must do is look at Jesus Christ to picture humbleness. The Creator of the world came down and was born in a manger. His three years of ministry paint a picture of how we should act. He walked everywhere He went, kings and queens and royalty rode in chariots or on horses and He could have done so, but He chose to humble Himself. He didn’t wear a crown or dress flashy or live in a big mansion. He ate with sinners despite Pharisees looking down on them. He loved the poor and He had compassion on them and others who were downtrodden.
I could write an entire book about all the miracles He performed for ordinary people who had various infirmities such as being blind, paralyzed, and others who were downtrodden. He sought no one else’s approval and downplayed His accomplishments and did not even tell anyone who He was until the very end.
Contrast that with people who brag about every accomplishment they ever made. Those who strut around like little banny roosters crowing about all they have done or have. Jesus had it all and never mentioned it and when He did He wasn’t bragging.
Some folks live like they will never die where they will face God and account for everything they ever did. They should read the Bible. As for me I try to work very hard to remain humble and I would be the first to admit I don’t always hit the target. God knows my weaknesses and I’m hopeful. He will let some of them slide. At least I acknowledge it and am trying to remedy the situation. Most importantly I have asked for forgiveness and I know He has heard my prayers and done so..
I think we just need to tell ourselves to hold off telling someone about how great we are. If you catch yourself bragging or acting self-righteous or haughty, give a rest and ask your Father in heaven to forgive and forget.
Proverbs 16:18
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
