I received quite a bit of correspondence about yesterday’s post. A good friend wrote the following:
Hey Bob, I pretty much agree with everything you’ve said here, and would like to see DeSantis over Trump for all the reasons you’ve cited. However, in fairness to Trump, despite his many, many, human frailty’s, narcissism, and ego, in my opinion, he governed more conservatively than any president in my memory, including Ronald Reagan, who has been my all-time favorite president. Reagan had class and was an eloquent speaker, Trump does not and is not. If only Trump could check his ego and take some advice… I am sure a multitude of people have attempted to try to steer him in a better direction, but it hasn’t happened and is not likely.
However, again in fairness to Trump, that guy has had a 24/7/365 onslaught by some of the most vicious and evil people the world has to offer trying to take him down. While the “package” is not pretty, he apparently has done some things right and his family must’ve done some things right or you would read about it 24/7 in the liberal media. Just imagine for a split second if the media went after the Biden family with 10% of the effort they’ve gone after the Trump family. Trump would look like a choir boy compared to ole Joe Biden.
Whether Trump or DeSantis I will be voting R as it is certainly better than the Satanic agenda which now represents the entire Democrat party. And one positive about a second term with Trump would be that I do think he’s smart enough to learn from some of his mistakes. If somehow he ends up being president again, I think he will tear into the Washington establishment more so than anyone else. Much of the reason we find our country, in its current state can be directly linked to the Washington establishment and all the dirty tentacles, which makes up the establishment, the deep state, the money, the greed, and the lust for ultimate power again, which drives so many in that arena – i.e. the Clintons, the Obamas, the Mitch, McConnell’s, etc., etc.
Despite his mini warts, I do believe Donald Trump is a patriot and experienced the American dream and wants to restore that for the average American. I’m afraid if somebody with the backbone and willingness to blow up, the status quo doesn’t come along we are doomed and destined, to the same fate of most empires, the world has known.
My response was as follows:
I hear you brother, but keep in mind that Trump’s Achilles heel is not just limited to narcissism and a gigantic ego, he is mean spirited, has the morals of a dog, is a bully, has a nasty mouth, is uncivil, self-centered, polarizing, and divisive, and I believe as crooked as the rest of the politicians. Yes he was a great president, and I haven’t forgotten that, but I don’t think he can replicate it especially with some 4000 lawsuits being filed against him and his need for revenge against anyone he views as disloyal which are many and even includes his former press secretary Kayleigh McEnaney and Mike Pence who are Christ followers of the highest order. He is the kind of person that goes after his perceived enemies and is litigious to a fault and said the other day that he rather enjoyed litigation. Can you imagine?
In my mind he in no way exemplifies a Godly man who fears God and hates dishonest gain. As you may recall I used to be an ardent supporter and even went to NYC with a group of Christian leaders to hear him speak and attend the meet and greet setup for the attendees. But he fooled me with his overture to the Christian community.
I for one will not compromise my spiritual beliefs in exchange for a better economy and other secular objectives. This may sound pious to some, but I don’t really care about anyone’s opinion other than God’s. The only way I will vote for him if it is between him and some liberal Dem. But I would have to hold my nose to do so. Thanks for your feedback. You make many valid points!
I agree Trump has been persecuted by powerful people and it would be natural for any human being to want to strike back. But let’s face it, objectively speaking, many of his wounds are self-inflicted. As an addendum I can say if Trump was my neighbor I would not want to be his friend. He does not represent my values and I don’t want friends like that. I’m not alone, I know many great Christian leaders that made overtures to him to change and follow Christ, but he has rejected them all. I do not think he sets a good example to the people of this nation, especially young people. The Bible is clear concerning the criteria we should use to select leaders. Unfortunately, he does not fit any of them.
I long for the country Trump was building before he fell. I have lost confidence that he can do it again primarily because of his refusal to obey the second most important command we are charged with as Christ followers and that is to love one another. That is the crux of the matter. If he would only humble himself before the Lord and listen to the Spirit. If he is reelected perhaps he will do so and pick up where he left off and make America great again. That is my prayer.
John 3:30
He must become greater; I must become less.
