Yesterday I had surgery on my back for a malignant skin cancer and if that wasn’t bad enough, he found two more places on my face that he biopsied of which he said he is “deeply concerned“. That is in addition to the 20 some odd places he burned off my arms, back, face, and neck, with liquid nitrogen. My skin is a mess and there are more potential killer barnacles on it now than ever. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if skin cancer takes me out. I’ve already had a melanoma and several other forms of aggressive skin cancer.

I was going fishing today, but I am so sore from my dermatology adventure I feel lousy. So instead of going fishing I decided to get my flu shot and a shingles vaccination later this morning. My wife already had her shots and felt very bad for a day or so afterwards and I feel sure it will make me feel likewise, so I decided to get all the misery over with this weekend and not have to suffer next week too.

I was talking to a buddy yesterday who was inquiring about my health. I told him I felt fine but was experiencing health setbacks that go with aging, (macular degeneration, spinal stenosis, skin cancer, arthritis, bad knees, and so on). Getting old is not fun, at least as far as health goes.

So, as I was driving home from the dermatology clinic in Key Largo, I received several phone calls in rapid succession. One was a chaplain in Jefferson Co. Louisiana who needed several more cases of my book, Miracle on Luckie Street in Spanish and English donated to the prison she works in. She told me the demand for them was amazing. Then I got a call from an executive co-producer in California who is doing a documentary of my friend Jack – Murf the Surf – Murphy’s life who wants to do an interview with me for it. The amazing life and conversion of this man was extraordinary, and no doubt will deeply affect the lost and give them hope. Then I got a call from a friend who might be willing to help with some much needed funding for the Jesus Alliance.

All the foregoing happened in just the short time that I was driving home from Key Largo to Duck Key. This got me to thinking about something rather personal. No one knows when they might go “toe up”, but we all know that unless we make it to the rapture we are going to die. I have always hoped that when I die, I would be able to go out while still serving the Lord. Even though I’m “retired” I’m still trying to do what I can to build the kingdom at every opportunity and hope to be able to continue that course right up to the day the Lord calls me home.

Life is fragile and wouldn’t it be a shame to lose it on a day of back-sliding. The Bible tells us to be vigilant, for Satan is like a roaring lion stalking the earth looking for those whom he might devour. Don’t allow him to tempt you away from doing the work of Jesus. Regardless of what may take me out or when it will happen, this verse describes how I feel about this subject:

2 Timothy 4:6
. . . For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who crave His appearing . . .

Have a great weekend and go to church this Sunday and please keep on fighting the good fight . . .
