My latest adventure has taken me all over the country. I’ve seen beautiful sights and experienced the glory of God’s creation over thousands and thousands of miles. Someone asked me the other day what my favorite thing I’d done so far has been. Was it California and catching giant bluefin tuna, or catching salmon in the Columbia River Gorge, or the breathtaking immensity of Alaska, or the mountains of North Carolina?
None of the above actually. The most fun I had was spending time with my kids and grandkids. I got to spend time with them all including all seven of my grandkids who range in age from college graduates to middle schoolers.
They are all incredibly busy. So, it was tough for them to work us in, but they were gracious about it, and we got to spend time with every last one of them. I suspect the headlights and taillights syndrome is at play. They love to see our headlights when we arrive and are just as happy to see our taillights as we depart. Lol, We tried not to wear out our welcome but living so far away we don’t get this opportunity often and we spent some quality time on this visit.
Someone once told me that opportunity is like a taxicab. When one pulls up if we dally around and don’t get in, it might be a long wait before we see another. We took advantage of the opportunity and hopefully there will be many more, but if not, at least we got to see them this time.
Next to God, I treasure my family more than anything. I love every last one of them and I hope they love me. Aside from the gift of Jesus, I think God’s gift of family was the most loving thing He could have ever done.
I did not have a good family life as a youngster, it was filled with sadness, violence, and loneliness, but God changed that for me. My proudest accomplishment in life is seeing my sons and their wives follow my wife and me and observing how they love their kids more than life itself.
Best of all, to a person, they all love the Lord. Raising these kids and watching them raise their kids in similar fashion is the ultimate legacy in my opinion and certainly the highlight of my life.
My mother, father, and my only sibling, my brother Jim are all gone now and I’m the last one standing in our little family. No one would have ever predicted that I would enjoy such success when I was a kid. I attribute all my success in every area of my life to God and His Holy Word. I am truly blessed, and I thank God every day for it.
Psalm 127:3
Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court
Have a great day and go to church this Sunday!
