Have you ever heard the expression, “The Lord works in mysterious ways?” It is a derivative of the plethora of Bible verses that speak of the mystery surrounding God. Recently I friend of mine told me that I had been blessed by God and that He has found favor in me and then he gave a couple of examples of things that had recently happened in my life to prove his point.
Hmmm – there is no denying that God has enormously blessed me. I can ask the “why?” question all day and speak to the issue of not deserving God’s favor, but I cannot deny that God has chosen to bless me in a mighty way. It is a mystery. He sometimes mysteriously accomplishes His will in this regard through working through the lives of others.
One avenue He has used to bless me is through the readership of Words for the Day. Recently I have mentioned in posts that my wife and I have been struggling to find a place to get our vaccinations for Covid. She is particularly vulnerable because of her age and damage sustained when she took chemo for breast cancer. Her pulmonary doctor has essentially told her that if she gets Covid the likelihood of it being fatal was high. Thus we have been trying to leave no stone unturned and have signed up with distribution sites all over Florida to get immunized but all to no avail.
Many friends have sent me links to distribution websites and one even got on their own computer at 5:30 a.m. on my behalf hoping to line up an appointment in the Publix lottery. A couple of days ago a reader from Georgia sent me information about some vaccine that will be available in her home town in Georgia in two weeks, and she also mentioned that she had heard they had some doses in the same county, Madison, that Honey Lake is located.
I sent her an e-mail and thanked her. Then she contacted me again and told me she had decided to call Madison Co. on my behalf herself. She said she had spoken with the health department there and they had some vaccine right now and to call them today before they ran out. She even provided me with the phone number and contact person with whom she had spoken. So we called right away and lo and behold we both got appointments for the two shots.
Today I will make the 8 hour trip up there, and tomorrow at 11:45 a.m. we will both be immunized. In 3 weeks we return for the follow-up shot and hopefully it will work. There are no guarantees that we will not get Covid, but with my wife’s serious lung problems we have done all we know to do.
In Phil. 2:4 we are told: Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. To my knowledge I have never met this lady, Sally Sullivan. Yet she graciously took the time to help me. Many others have tried to help me in the effort to help solve this problem. They could have just read the post that I wrote about the Covid dilemma, yawned, and deleted it, but these folks wanted to help and took some of their most precious commodity, their time,
to do it.
May God bless them forever!
We don’t see too much of that going on in society these days, but this is a demonstration of God’s love working through others via the Holy Spirit. I encourage you to consider when an opportunity presents itself whereby you can help serve a need, to take advantage of it, and go to bat for them.
Remember the Bible says, Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. It is the Christian way to help those in need. If you wish to pursue this command further and do more, I urge you to take a look at The Jesus Alliance. It has taken this verse and run with it and has been organizing many followers of Jesus and ministries throughout the country and indeed the world for the express purpose of helping those with a need.
God is full of mercy and love. He wants us to be His ambassadors and for us to allow the light he has lit in His church to shine brightly. It is a mystery how this occurs but it is no mystery why He does it. He does it because He intensely loves everyone in this world. He has graciously given us the definition of that which is truly life. Take time to read and reflect on the verse below today. Who knows maybe you might just save someone’s very life.
1 Timothy 6:17
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
