So at long last election day is upon us. Hundreds of good and not so good folks will cease running for office and the results will be announced. I’m hoping that the Republicans can hold the House and Senate, but history tells us they will lose the House . . . Ugh.
Moses was told by God as related in Exodus 21 “Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe . . . ” Not many of those types around these days or come to think of it, days past. Signer of the Declaration of Independence Samuel Adams said: “Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote . . . that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country.” Those who choose not to vote, or are too lazy, or busy should rethink their decision.
President James Garfield wrote: “Now more than ever the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature.”
And perhaps Noah Webster put it best when he wrote: “When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public officers, let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers, “just men who will rule in the fear of God.” The preservation of government depends on the faithful discharge of this duty; if the citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted; laws will be made, not for the public good so much as for selfish or local purposes; corrupt or incompetent men will be appointed to execute the laws; the public revenues will be squandered on unworthy men; and the rights of the citizens will be violated or disregarded. If a republican government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the divine commands, and elect bad men to make and administer the laws.”
Hmmm . . . I suppose we must accept blame for electing the scumbag people in office as well as the good. Admittedly it is often difficult in these last days to find Godly men and women who will rule in fear of God. It is easy to understand how our government has become corrupt, especially when examining how many “Christians” refuse to vote. It is difficult to convince people to vote. Some think their vote doesn’t matter, others throw all politicians into the same stinky barrel stating they are all bums and the elitist religious find everyone unworthy and declare everyone an infidel.
I say vote for the best people you can find on the ballot even if you have to hold your nose to do it. We have only ourselves to blame if things turn out bad. God tells us to vote for those who fear God, are trustworthy, and hate a bribe. So make an effort to discern who they are and go vote today . . . Christians of all people should be voting today.
Romans 11:5
So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.
