I observed a kid treating his mother like she was a dog the other day. Check that, most dogs are treated far better. This spoiled brat defied his mother and repeatedly told her no and even cursed her. I don’t know how old he was, but I would guess somewhere around ten. She didn’t seem to be fazed and just smiled at the little urchin. I just shook my head and wondered why?

Yesterday I read an article about a Bradenton Florida man, Hermes Callijas-Gasperin shown pictured below. He was arrested after he allegedly threw sausages at his mother.

According to the police report, he became infuriated with her after she told him he needed to wait a few minutes before she cooked him food. The victim told the police that her son got angry and threw sausages and a meat tube at her and one hit her directly in the eye. She also told police that her son placed his hands around her neck and pushed her backwards.

When police talked to Hermes, he told deputies that his mother bumped into him in the kitchen and that’s why he threw the sausages at her. He told deputies that he did nothing wrong and he wouldn’t have done it if the victim would have said ‘sorry.’

By his own words he stated that “he didn’t do anything wrong.”

Huh?

The Bible is clear that children must be disciplined and not just by taking a timeout.
They cannot raise themselves and they need corporal punishment when they misbehave.
I realize that in today’s politically correct permissive society disciplining a kid by spanking can land the parent in jail.

Hmmm . . . Her son landed in jail.

I’m not an advocate of beating children. My children learned at an early age however, that I would not hesitate to spank them and for the most part it didn’t take many trips down that road to learn right from wrong and what would happen if they did the wrong things. These were not savage beatings, but stringent enough to dissuade further bad behavior. I am familiar with savage beatings. Do not spare the rod does not give someone a license to savagely beat someone. My father didn’t like me and used to savagely beat me daily and all it did was make me mean. His kind of discipline reminded me of chaining up a dog and screaming at him and beating him every day. You will either break him or create a monster. In my case I became a monster until Jesus came into my life and showed me love.

I loved my boys so much I disciplined them when they needed it. I’m glad I did and if I had ended up in jail for it, I would have gladly done so to keep them out of jail. Today they are successful in every aspect of their lives. I cannot imagine one of them putting their hand on their mother’s throat, or screaming at her, or pelting her with sausages.

I like to think of the Bible in terms of it being akin to an instruction manual for an automobile. That book will tell you how to get the best performance out of your vehicle. Change the oil regularly, rotate the tires, change the filters, etc. – All those things lead to a problem free vehicle. Ignore it at your own peril and don’t complain when bad things happen.

The Bible tells us to honor our mother and father, not to steal, murder, lie, adultery and so on. Ignore it at your own peril. Do the right thing and reap the benefits. The Bible is written to lead us into a peaceful, joyful, loving existence. God is not an enemy. He loves us more than anyone can imagine. Read the Bible and choose the right way. The gentleman discussed above is sitting in a jail cell because he chose the wrong way and did not honor his mother. Did he receive a biblical upbringing about honoring his mother?

If you love your children, then don’t indulge them when they behave poorly.

Proverbs 13:24

Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.
