A couple of years back I was attempting to get a grant from a large foundation and the man in charge patiently listened to the vision the Lord had entrusted me with and then in a matter of fact manner told me it was too ambitious and referred to it as “trying to boil the ocean.” I told a couple of people about it and it seems that they have jumped on that wagon too and they too have begun espousing this saying.
That entire line of thought is very distressing to me.
Apparently, this devout man in charge of issuing grants for one of the largest Christ centered foundations in the world and others have not read Jeremiah 32:27 – I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?If they have read that passage could it be that their faith is so small that they limit God to what human logic deems reasonable?
That’s a defeatist attitude even for human feats. Nonetheless, since time began they have made their voices heard. Common wisdom and scientific knowledge declared that the earth was flat. They said a sub-four-minute mile was an insurmountable barrier (until Sir Roger Bannister set a world record time of 3min 59.4sec in 1954. Since then, a new world record has been set 18 times, the current record of 3:43.13 being clocked in 1999. More than 30 seconds have been shaved off the fastest mile time in the past 100 years and human limits are constantly being pushed by hyper-elite athletes.) Doom-mongers were silenced when Chuck Yeager did the impossible in breaking the sound barrier which the defeatists said was impossible and the plane would disintegrate if that limit were crossed thus making it sound like the impossible dream. Suffice it to say the world has no shortage of fatalists in the faith-based community and the secular…
Don’t fall for the trap when you ask God for a miracle. If it was God’s will He could boil the oceans of the world faster than we could boil an egg. When we approach God and ask for our miracle but perhaps have nagging doubts, we should first look to the heavens which display the glory of God’s fingers. Just the stars that we can see cannot be numbered and no doubt there are plenty more that we cannot see. Think of the glory of this little blue marble called earth suspended in space, it alone is enough to bewilder the most intelligent among us. If you have faith that God created the heavens and the earth, big ideas are not so difficult to believe in when the Lord is involved.
Can God make it happen? Of course! The question concerning our mission is does Christ want the Body of Christ to work together towards establishing His kingdom at this moment in time? Jesus, in His own words prayed for unity in John 17:20: I am not asking on behalf of them alone, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in us…So yes, he wants unity within the body of believers His church even if we have to ask Him to assist with boiling the ocean to do so.

There is no secular or spiritual reason that the Jesus Alliance cannot begin unifying the willing to counteract the anti-God forces that are so pervasive in our current culture and we are doing it. We have only reached 25 million people this yearand they are reaching far more than that monthly. Funding is abundant for them and miniscule to us and to those who lack faith it seems like trying to boil the ocean, but to me it is a matter of faith, perseverance and prayer. God will provide at a time of His choosing. Ask Jesus to help us boil the ocean in your prayers right now and if you have a heart for this donate any amount to the Jesus Alliance today.
