So yesterday I received a letter from a “brother in Christ.” He is upset that I and other evangelicals support Trump. He followed the usual attack mode going after Trump’s morals and lack of being a role model for Christianity. He sees what he describes as chaos, contradictions and lies in the same sentence. An atheist that I’ve been debating has recently written to say essentially the same thing.
I suppose I wonder why Trump is supposedly a model for Christianity in their minds. I don’t look at him that way at all. This country is not a theocracy and Trump is not pastor in chief. God used Cyrus the Great to free the Jews and he was secular to the bone, but he accomplished great things for God’s chosen people. Where does it say in the Bible that God only uses religious people to accomplish His goals?
It doesn’t!
Like Cyrus the Great Trump has done much for the faith-based community including nominating judges like Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, putting a stop to religious discrimination in various areas, taking measures to reform the prison system, moving our embassy to Jerusalem and otherwise supporting Israel, and championing life versus abortion, but he is no model Christian and to my knowledge doesn’t claim to be. This guy said he wouldn’t want him as a role model. Fair enough. So, you don’t want Trump, so who in politics is better? Hillary or Bill Clinton? Or perhaps the socialist Bernie Sanders?
Most of Trumps misdeeds occurred decades ago. Who doesn’t have some things in their past that are troubling and that they are not proud of; I know I have plenty. But you say even today Trump uses profanity and is arrogant and is a narcissist and is no Mother Teresa. Gosh too bad he isn’t perfect like us huh? People rant that he told a lie. Geez for every lie he might have told, 1000 are told about him. I don’t even know how you can say he is lying, I read a dozen news websites every day and I have no idea who is telling the truth about much of anything.
Perhaps this evangelical brother, is too quick to judge Trump. The president claims that only recently did he receive Christ as his savior and ask that his sins be forgiven. Perhaps this dude should read the “red in his Bible” where Christ states that our sins are forgiven. If Trump sins again and asks for forgiveness, he is forgiven again. Not for some of his sins, but ALL of them.
Both these gentlemen went on to talk about how terrible it is to build a wall instead of welcoming anyone and everyone who wants to enter this country. We should feed, house, educate them in their own language, give them jobs, and provide healthcare for everyone who wants to come here. Considering the Twin Towers attack and other acts of terrorism, in my mind, that is a very stupid statement, but even if you agree with it, the last time I checked the United States gave more aid to poor and starving underdeveloped countries than the rest of the world combined.
If we opened our borders to everyone, the entire world would come here. This guy stated that Jesus would welcome them with open arms. Why not just let the hordes in? Use some common-sense man . . . Read the Bible: Instead, God chose a builder whose name was Nehemiah. “And the first step of rebuilding the nation was the building of a great wall. God instructed Nehemiah to build a wall around Jerusalem to protect its citizens from enemy attack. You see, God is NOT against building walls!”
Jesus did help everyone whom he encountered, but what about those He didn’t personally encounter? He told His church to help them. The United States is stepping up to that plate in that regard, but practically speaking there are limits to what one country can do, even one greatly blessed like America.
Back to Trump. I don’t point to him as a model Christian and I seriously doubt he would say that about himself. I do say that so far, he has proven to be a remarkable leader who has turned this country around to head in the right direction and saved it from the disaster of Obama and Hillary Clinton.
God uses all kinds of people to accomplish his goals. Name one other person that God could have used to face the withering hordes and constant hate hurled at him as he tries to drain the swamp. You can’t do it, try as you might. So, quit writing me about Trump and whining about his crude obnoxious behavior. He is a New Yorker and rude, but he is a darn good president and I support him 100%. If you don’t agree then we disagree . . .
Micah 7:11
The day for rebuilding your walls will come – the day for extending your boundary. On that day they will come to you from Assyria and the cities of Egypt, even from Egypt to the Euphrates and from sea to sea and mountain to mountain . . .
