I’ve recently spent some time among some people who are spending time in a rehabilitation clinic who are depressed, seriously depressed. They don’t smile and seem on the verge of breaking into tears at any moment.

Yesterday several of them who had made decisions to follow Christ were Baptized in Honey Lake on Easter Sunday. There were smiles, big smiles, and the only tears I saw were tears of joy. It was quite a contrast and delightful to see the transformation of their demeanor.

I knew a man who had the most cheerful disposition of anyone I’ve ever met. He was just bubbling over with genuine enthusiasm for life. I remember when he got colon cancer. He underwent painful surgery which included his rectal area and removal of his colon. He then endured radiation and chemo which were no picnic. Through it all it seemed as if he was the one cheering up those of us around him who were concerned about him, instead of us trying to cheer him up.

I asked him how he could remain so positive through this painful, serious trial, and he replied: “Well Bob, when I get up every morning and look in the mirror I say aloud, I have a choice today, I can be happy, or I can be sad, I choose to be happy.”

He was a man of tremendous faith and his smile and vibrant cheerful personality influenced others mightily. Today he is in heaven and I’m sure that big smile is even wider.

Today the world is a mess and Christians are ridiculed and persecuted. This is an age-old battle between darkness and light and it will continue until Jesus returns. While we cannot do anything about that aspect of our lives, we can do something about how we react to it, namely our attitudes. Look at yourself in the mirror this morning and realize you have a choice today. You can be happy or sad. Choose to be happy. As a believer you have plenty of reason.

HE HAS RISEN!

1 Peter 4:12

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.
