Anyone who uses e-mail to any extent and has a boatload of friends will usually have at least one person that will flood their inbox with the silliest junk one can imagine every day. I have such a friend and approximately a year ago I admonished him to quit sending me so much junk e-mail. I told him I had important work to do and I didn’t have time to go through all this junk daily. He was deeply offended and got very angry. He warned me that if I did not respond to him by the next day, he would discontinue corresponding to me.

Hmmm . . . That made me think of the Disney character Uncle Remus telling the story of a rabbit caught by a fox. He asked the fox to do with him whatever he liked but to please don’t throw him into the briar patch. The fox fell for it, and immediately threw the rabbit into the briar patch, (where he lived and the fox couldn’t go) thus enabling him to easily escape.

So, of course, I immediately quit responding to him. True to his threat he stopped sending me anything. It was nice and peaceful for many months until this morning when I opened my email and I saw five junk emails from him.

OMG . . .  He’s back!

For some unknown reason he picked up right where he left off. He wrote:

Yea!!!!   I’m on a roll . . . I thought I would never send you another E-Mail. I guess I’m on a roll . . . Sue me!

No, no, no . . . this can’t be happening again. It was reminiscent of the movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray.

I sighed heavily and decided to see what he’d sent. To my surprise one of them was actually funny and I’ve included it below:

I guess this just goes to show that one should never assume the worst about anything. When I read this I’d just finished viewing the news on many different websites and was near overwhelmed by the negativity and in a surly mood. I hate to start my day in a surly mood! This brief moment of laughter eased my burden.

I don’t know if this guy unsubscribed from Words for the Day when he got mad or not. If not, I hope my acknowledging this one doesn’t erupt into a volcano of new junk emails . . . I’m skittish that I will launch a firestorm of silliness, but I’m glad he sent this one today.

Old King Solomon, the wisest man the earth will ever know, advised that there is a definite time for laughter. So come on, put a smile on your face this morning. Today is your time to laugh, maybe tomorrow we can weep . . .

Ecclesiastes 3:4

“a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;”
