I just realized that I passed another milestone with Words for the Day. June marks the 19th year I’ve been writing it. Many have subscribed and unsubscribed through the years, but amazingly there are still some of you reading it that were with me from the very beginning.
Five days a week no matter where I am in the world I faithfully write WFTD. I’ve written it when I was feeling bad, in the hospital, on vacation, on business trips, whatever, and only rarely have my good friend Al Cuneo and his son George repost past entries when I am in a location where I just can’t send it due to Internet problems or whatever.
I’ve received thousands upon tens of thousands of e-mails through the years, some of which thank and encourage me to continue, and others that disparage and even threaten me to stop writing or “else.”
Interestingly I don’t write it for accolades and I’m not the least bit afraid of those who don’t like WFTD or me. I would write it if I were the only one reading it. I began as a result of my Bible study every morning before work. I would search the Bible for answers on how to solve whatever problem(s) I was facing that particular day, or whatever the Lord was putting on my heart. I wanted to know what God thought about the matter, so I could try to follow His direction and not my own.
One day I thought that just maybe others were having similar problems, or had spiritual questions about a variety of subjects that they would like to receive my input on, and I began to share the posts with those who were in my employ and desired to receive it. I never once so much as looked at who subscribed and still don’t, because I didn’t want it to affect my relationship with them. The only way I realize that someone is reading it is when they respond to something I’ve written.
I’ve never tried to monetize it even though it costs me money to host and distribute. And I’ve never tried to advertise it. It has grown strictly by word of mouth.
I have nearly every last one of them stored in a database and hope that someday I can find time to work my way through them and pick out the very best entries and put them into a book. You should know that I never pre-plan an entry for WFTD, rather I am led daily by the Holy Spirit. I have been asked by people for years how I come up with the subject matter day in and day out. It really isn’t a mystery at all, I simply pray for the Lord to give me direction and He does.
However, to be sure I’m flawed flesh, and I have admittedly strayed on occasion. I think that it is probably a good thing because it shows that I’m transparent and always genuine. I’m not perfect and neither is anyone else no matter how pious they may act. I tell it like I see it for better or worse.
Thus, since it is written by flesh and not dictated by God as is the Bible, some entries are stupid, outrageous, funny, emotional, interesting, boring, angry, happy, sad, and a few are downright glorious, (those are the ones when I really listened to the Lord).
Words for the Day is akin to Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, “you just never know what you’re gonna get.” If you’re a Seinfeld fan it’s similar in nature, it’s about nothing but life.
At any rate, I hope you enjoy it, if not, simply unsubscribe and don’t worry about it; no use getting all riled up because you don’t agree with anything I say. I hope that you will consult God’s word daily. I personally have never found a question that could not be answered through Bible study and prayer. God gave us all the wisdom we need to get through this life in fine shape in His Bible. All we need to do is study it. It is available – pick it up or Google it and start your journey today.
Proverbs 2:6
For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
