I was curious where the term backslide came from. I looked it up in the dictionary and it simply defined backsliding as lapsing into sin or wrongdoing. I’m curious as to where the term itself came from. I think maybe the term backslide is a literal term that came from someone’s description of what literally happens to us when we try to go it alone without God. Satan knocks us for a loop and sends us sliding across life flat on our backs. We end up feeling the pain that is always the result of sin.
Actually the Bible plainly tells us that, alone, we are no match for satan and his satanic army. We are mere flesh and blood; satan is a spiritual being that was created with more power than we possess. By ourselves, we are no match for satan; however, satan is no match for God. When we are teamed up with God, we are safe and satan flees the awesome power of God like a scared rabbit. When we backslide, we go it alone.
Occasionally all of us backslide to one degree or other. If we allow ourselves to get into this situation, there is a way out. If we will repent and ask Him to forgive us our sin, God will forgive us, pick us back up, dust us off, and get us on our feet again. Unfortunately sometimes it seems that some of us must be pounded into the ground, often repeatedly before we seek God for help. God does not want us to be pounded by satan and his sin and end up sliding on our backs through life. He gives us instructions in the Bible on how to defeat satan.
Unfortunately many of us do not read His instruction manual, (the Bible), and those of us who do, often fail to follow His instructions. The result is we lapse into sin and wrongdoing which always has its consequence that we will have to suffer through.
I was talking to a friend about this very thing the other day and he stated to me that it is amazing how well things go for him when he is closest to the Lord, and how bad things tend to be when he drifts away from Him.
Actually when you consider the foregoing, it isn’t really that amazing. It is just the way God plainly laid it out for us in the Bible.
Are you backsliding? If so, you cannot be very happy right now. We can all get off our backsides and stand, and we can experience real joy and happiness by drawing close to God. Try it, you will like it!
