Political correctness has overtaken our lives. What is political correctness? The dictionary states that it is: is a term which, in modern usage, is used to describe language, policies, or measures which are intended not to offend or disadvantage any particular group of people in society. In the media, the term is generally used as a disparaging term implying that these policies have become excessive.
Gosh! Do you think?
It is especially noticeable in colleges and universities. G.H. Bush said at a commencement speech: “The notion of political correctness has ignited controversy across the land. And although the movement arises from the laudable desire to sweep away the debris of racism and sexism and hatred, it replaces old prejudice with new ones.”
Sure it might have begun to try and keep from hurting feelings, but now it is like a raging fire out of control. Jacques Barzun said: “Political correctness does not legislate tolerance; it only organizes hatred.” Those who are demanding tolerance have moved to a rigid position of intolerance. It is evident in every sphere of our culture including Arts and Entertainment. Mel Gibson – I am politically incorrect, that’s true. Political correctness to me is just intellectual terrorism. I find that really scary, and I won’t be intimidated into changing my mind. Everyone isn’t going to love you all the time.
It has become so bad that if one quotes actual statistics about children born outside of wedlock such as: 72 percent of all births to black women, 66 percent to American Indian or Alaskan native women, and 53 percent to Hispanic women occurred outside of marriage, compared with 29 percent for white women, and 17 percent for Asian or Pacific Islander women, then for sure you are a racist.
One is also deemed to be a racist by the politically correct crowd, if one were to mention actual prison ethnic population breakdowns such as: “While people of color make up about 30 percent of the United States’ population, they account for 60 percent of those imprisoned. The incarceration rates: 1 in every 15 African American men and 1 in every 36 Hispanic men are incarcerated in comparison to 1 in every 106 white men”.
The truth does not make anyone a racist, sexist, homophobe, or whatever. Actually the Bible tells us that the truth sets us free and that truth can be found for every problem that I have ever encountered within its covers. Statistics are not prejudiced. If these same people would simply acknowledge that there is a fundamental breakdown of the family unit in these communities, particularly with fathers not marrying and refusing to be around to raise their kids, perhaps a solution could be found to change their behavior, thereby allowing those kids to escape a life that is free of poverty, despair, hopelessness, and crime.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to note the correlation between single parent homes and lack of education, poverty, joblessness, welfare recipients, addiction, and incarceration rates. These are merely facts, and it is not hate speech to quote them.
The Bible tells us to tell the truth, but the fact of the matter is truth is stymied by the speech police and there can be no intelligent discussion about countless issues that are wrecking the lives of so many. The root causes of societal ills are being swept under the rug of political correctness and as a result nothing changes.
Unfortunately it takes courage to speak up and not many will take on what has become a dangerous mission complete with death threats, (I know first-hand about them, because I’ve had them). We should pray for those who do speak up and maybe even grow some courage and speak out ourselves.
John 8:31
“If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
