Last week I met with a man who formerly was one of the most powerful people on the face of the earth. It was fascinating to hear him recount world changing events with which he was involved and to understand what was going on behind the scenes.
He is a born again believer and I asked him what he believed to be the number one reason that America is in such rapid decline. I was surprised at his answer. I assumed that due to his background that he would say government, but he said media.
I queried him on that and he smiled and said that no form of media can be trusted and yes that includes Fox News. He indicated that he was there and knew what was happening first hand and then later when he read about it in the news the press had twisting things to the point of the event being unrecognizable.
He went on to say that most commentators get up in the morning and read several newspapers such as the New York Times, online blogs such as Drudge, and other sources and they receive daily spin from various newsmakers who are trying to slant themselves and their deeds and desires in the most positive light. Opinions are formed from this collection of debris and are later espoused as truth in their broadcasts. He told me old fashioned investigative reporting is a lost art.
I have another powerful friend who just took a job working with a man who owns more television stations than anyone in the world. He was afforded a lavish $100 million budget and tasked to create a news outlet for young people that will espouse the truth. Basically he said no group in America is more heavily targeted with lies than young people and they don’t receive the truth about much of anything. His wealthy new boss to his credit wants to change all of that and is putting his money where his mouth is. My friend told me being CEO of this new enterprise and recruiting his team of reporters was one of the greatest challenges of his life.
Intelligent people want to keep up with current events. How can we know if what we are reading or watching is accurate?
We cannot.
So how do we discover truth?
Good question . . . I wish I knew the answer.
I do know that in reality there is only one truth that we can trust, and it is the Bible. Jesus said the following:
John 8:31 – “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” . . .
