So I’m still getting some blowback from folks about my post the other day about the church helping the Syrian refugees. Hmmm . . . Seems ironic to me that that this comes during our Thanksgiving holiday when millions of people, at least in this country, will gorge on turkey feasts until they are miserable while 11 of the 22 million people in Syria are literally starving to death without a singular possession aside from the very clothes they are wearing.

As clarification I said that it is the church’s job to take care of the poor, downtrodden, and suffering in this world. This comes from Jesus Christ not me. It is not the responsibility of the church to protect the homeland; that is the job of the government and our various defense departments. I believe in strong defense, but I also believe that if we are followers of Christ we must have and live out compassion for those in the world who suffer.

One reader sent me a news clip from Washington Post written in the thirties that was eerily reminiscent of what is happening today.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2015/11/17/what-americans-thought-of-jewish-refugees-on-the-eve-of-world-war-ii/

There were 10,000 Jewish children that were trying to immigrate into the United States to escape the oppression from Hitler and 67.4% of the American population opposed it. I wonder how many of them ended up being victims of genocide.

Of course God and His desires and commands are not always at the top of our citizen’s lists. This phenomenon prompted Billy Graham to write in March of this year:

“America has been blessed by God more than any nation on the face of the earth,” he said. “When our country was birthed, its foundations and laws, were based on biblical laws and principles.” “We used to be ‘one nation under God,’ now we’re a nation that has turned it back on God. History shows that when nations do this, their end is near,” said Rev. Graham.

As for me I choose to take the road of compassion and mercy that was afforded me by Jesus Christ. Perhaps if more people were of that mindset, people like Mahatma Gandhi would not write things like: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

Have a wonderful day today!

Matt. 18:10

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven.”
