Today all three of my sons, their wives, all seven of my grandchildren, and two dogs will arrive at my house. I would note that our house is almost spooky quiet most all of the time. Consider that my wife nor I listen to the radio or the stereo, our little pup Coopie is quiet as a spider walking across the room and has never barked in his life, save one time when I accidentally stepped on him, I don’t watch television except for the evening news, I do not have a telephone in my house, and it is eerily quiet as a tomb most of the time.
So what do we do? My wife sits in her easy chair in the living room and reads or plays solitaire on her I Pad and I sit in my office and work, or go back to our bedroom and read.
I suppose you could say we are boring
Hmmm . . . I suppose I would say it too.
Well our quiet boring life is getting ready to change and in a few hours – BEDLAM!
One advantage I have is that my insomnia prevents sleep and thus I will be up long before daylight and it will be quiet. I’ve come to appreciate my friend “quiet” very much. Thanks to him I can collect my thoughts, pray more effectively, and clear my mind of trash.
Recently someone stole my youngest son’s laptop. He replaced it and while he was out and about he bought a new I Phone. He hasn’t taken the time to get his e-mail setup and working on it and therefore hasn’t been receiving any e-mails via phone. He told me that he might leave it that way stating that he ordinarily receives disturbing work related e-mails even when he is home trying to spend precious time with his family. He said he ends up working half the night and some of the emails put him in a foul mood. Since his email has been disabled he’s been able to enjoy far more time with his family and stay in a better mood.
I might follow his lead on that and I’m thinking of giving up on watching the news too. It makes me angry every night, much of it is distorted and biased and serves no useful purpose, and it is rare if anything good is reported. It seems that the news people thrive on the worst of the worst. I suppose that means we do too, because ratings is what turns the news outlet’s clocks and if there was no appetite for it, they would drop it like a hot rock.
Imagine a world with no e-mail, nightly news, or texts . . . Yesterday as I looked at all of the toys my grandsons had amassed overnight including star wars type computerized toys of every description I thought back to a Christmas in which a received one present, a hula hoop. I was thrilled because Santa had just given me what I wanted and I was doing the hula up and down the streets for months.
Boring!
Yes . . .
I like boring.
Everyone was up in arms because the movie about North Korea’s numbskull leader was not going to be shown. Even President Obama took time from his golf game in Hawaii to comment on it. I’m told the movie ends when his head is blown up.
Man I think I’ll run down there and see that . . . NOT! I’ll stick to boring thank you very much.
Have a great Christmas weekend and be sure and go to Honey Lake Church, (or somewhere), this weekend and celebrate the birth of Christ. It is after all HIS birthday that we are celebrating this weekend. The least we can do is take some time and worship our Savior.
